Five skaters representing the Markham Speed Skating Club made their presence felt at the Ontario Cup No. 1 race in Cambridge recently.
Top honours went to Alexandra Ianculescu, 15, who won the silver medal in the junior women's division with a first-place finish in the 500-metre race and second-place efforts in the 1000m, 777m and 1500m.
In the juvenile boys field, Chester Roxas, 12, finished 20th overall, but set personal best times in the 777m, 666m and 1000m.
Cameron Mitchell, 11, was fifth in the midget boys' division.
Among midget girls, Aileen Song, 11, placed 12th and had a personal best time in the 500m.
Neil Roxas, 9, squeaked under the qualifying times to compete in the bantam boys division and finished 12th with personal bests in the 333m and 666m.
At the Brampton Ability competition, Jessica Griffith, 11, led the Markham contingent by claiming the silver medal in the India division.
Overcoming first-time jitters, she captured first place in three of her four races.
Also making his debut, Scott Taylor, 10, placed third in the Juliet division.
Sophie Croteau, 13, made her debut in the Kilo division and was 13th.
In the Golf division, Heidi Beck, 12, was fifth after placing first in the secondary final of the 333m and fourth in the 500m primary final.
Making her debut in the November division, Claire DesRosiers, 8, finished sixth after advancing into the primary final of the 222m and winning the secondary final of the 111m.
Among adult competitors in the Foxtrot division, first-timers Ron Wolfe, Masters 2, and Jo Demarco, Masters 3, finished fifth and sixth respectively.
Roger Buxton, a Masters 4 racer, was ninth.
Gary Witney, a veteran Masters 4 competitor, raced in the Echo division and achieved a personal goal of breaking through the 60-second mark for 500m.
